Today it is appropriate to have contemplative music that hails from America – I think perhaps this is the best choice – this is the vocal version that Barber himself transcribed. Close your eyes and let it wash over you.

An Old Favourite – A New Take On It
I am well aware that even though I am familiar with lots of music there is even more that I do not know. I am also aware that with music (as with many aspects of our lives) we all tend to stuck to the familiar without allowing sufficient opportunity to find new things. Its been nice to get some feedback on my posts to the effect that what I have shared was new to someone.
A New Take On An Old Hymn
A familiar hymn today – maybe an unfamiliar arrangement
Different Fauré
For this Friday’s slow moment we turn to Fauré – but not the Requiem – this is one of those pieces that you know – but can’t quite place who wrote it and what the title is! Its perfect for relaxation.
Another Bruckner Motet
The only difficulty when it comes to choosing something by Bruckner for a Sunday offering is that there is so much to choose from! Its been a while since we had one of his motets – here is his Ave Maria – another example of why he is (probably) my favourite composer)
Gloria With Glorianna
I have concentrated on the summer schools – but my association with the music department in Glasgow afforded a lot of other opportunities as well. One was being in the orchestra for a choral concert (I think with the Glasgow Schools Choir) consisting of the Faure Requiem and the Vivaldi Gloria.
Perhaps An Unexpected Source of Religious Music
Today’s choice is Stravinsky’s setting of Psalm 150 – the third and final movement of his Symphony of Psalms. When I played this with the Glasgow University this was very new music to me and I wasn’t sure whether I liked listening to it – even though it was good to play.
Some Lovely Choral Music
This is one of my favourite choral pieces and it is perfect for a moment of calm and reflection today. The video has a title that for many will be unintelligible – it is Brahms’ “Schicksalslied” (Song of Destiny)
For The Greater Glory Of God
A very large percentage of the 3472 Sundays that I’ve been around for have been spent worshiping in some form or other at the Salvation Army. In that time, of course, the form of worship has changed quite a bit – but it is still very much of the same tradition.
Making It Up As You Go Along
Continuing the a capella theme we again expanding the size of the choir and change the style of the music. One of the prime skills of any musician is the ability to communicate with those who are listening – and what better way than by encouraging them to take part.
