For The Greater Glory Of God

A very large percentage of the 3472 Sundays that I’ve been around for have been spent worshiping in some form or other at the Salvation Army. In that time, of course, the form of worship has changed quite a bit – but it is still very much of the same tradition.

There are, however, many other forms of worship and praise and today’s music falls into one of those categories. The Te Deum (which begins : “We praise thee, O God : we acknowledge thee to be the Lord”) is part of the services in many Christian denominations and has been set to music by innumerable composers from Thomas Tallis to Arvo Pärt.

I’ve said before that if I had to choose just one “favourite” composer it would be Bruckner and his setting of the Te Deum is today’s choice. Given that he was deeply religious it is no surprise that the dedication is “for the greater glory of God”
