Hunting Music (With Horns Of Course)

Back to “music I have played” (usually with a good horn part 😁)

Anyone remember that I mentioned during my “funny stories” week about having to play Beethoven 4 seated back to back with the 1st Horn? Well after composing ourselves and getting a bit more serious the next item on the programme in that concert was this overture – with a great horn quartet at the opening.

As was common then – the horns are actually in two pairs – two in F and two in C – transposition is a very necessary skill for horn players!! It didn’t always go perfectly though!!

I like this recording – it is not a performance, but a rehearsal.

Amongst the comments on this video is one guy (presumably trying to show off his musical knowledge) who says that “it is always better to practice at a slower speed – I expect that in performance this would be about 30% faster” – wow, that would be a gallop – and anyway this recording is one of the shortest (and therefore quickest) on Youtube!!
