Something very different from yesterday (and actually from all my previous seasonal offerings). I am pretty sure that we sang some of this in our school choir (I think “There is no Rose” and “Deo Gracias”). It is actually 12 separate little sections rather than one whole piece of music.
Choral
Not We Three Kings
I am pretty sure that I first heard this carol when I sang it with my school choir. Its not the “Three Kings” that we are most used to.
Happy Thanksgiving
Happy Thanksgiving – and what more apt piece of music than this for today. Bach has probably been under-represented in my choices up until now, so this will make up for that a little.
Old Tune – New Variant
There are many hymn tunes that can sound very dreary unless they are given a bit extra. Here is an old hymn which, in this setting, is much more uplifting than it can be sometimes.
How Could They Not
This week of exploring just some of the huge variety of sacred music began with a Salvation Army march that brought back memories of my “early years” at Govan and I complete the circle now by returning to those same roots and choosing a song that our Songster Brigade used on many occasions.
Not What You Expect From Piotr Ilyich
Tchaikovsky is not a composer who is particularly associated with sacred music – this piece is rather different from the likes of the 1812 Overture 😉 and fits rather well into my calm Friday slot.
A Setting of the Mass
Yesterday’s march choice was, of course, very typical of the Salvation Army music that I grew up with and which has been a constant accompaniment to my life.
As Close To Heaven As You Can Get
Its not Friday – but it is a reflective piece of music. One of the comments on this video says “as close to heaven as you can get without actually going there” – which sort of sums it up.
Stillness For Sunday
I first learned to play cornet in our Young People’s band in Govan – with my dad as YP Band Leader – so no pressure there. Then, by the time I joined the Songsters (choir for those unfamiliar with Salvation Army terminology 😉) my dad was Songster Leader. So there is probably no doubt that my “style” owed something to my father.
It Is Well
I had pencilled this one in for today quite a few days ago and strangely this song has come up on my FB feed several times in different formats in the last few days – so I guess this is meant to be for someone.
