Regular readers of these posts (I think there are a few!! 😃) may remember a tale I told about a difficulty that myself and the principal horn had with the opening of Beethoven’s 4th Symphony that reduced us to tears of laughter!!
My Favourite Piano Concerto?
This week’s “big piece” is a piano concerto – possibly my favourite piano concerto.
Boscombe Band In Norwich
Its been a while since I featured our Band on these Sunday choices – so I better rectify that! A few years ago we visited Norwich Citadel for the weekend and – for the first time – appeared on Facebook Live! Unfortunately they had some technical issues during the first part of the Saturday Evening Festival, so it is not all available.
Another From My Intro To Classical Music
This overture is another of the works that was included in the Reader’s Digest collection of LPs that my Dad had bought and which was, I guess, my introduction to “classical” music.
A Lesser Known Skill
You might want to listen to this several times to get a sufficiently long “moment” of reflection today.
Every Horn Player’s Dream!
(or perhaps nightmare 😂) Yesterday we had a lesser known piece by Beethoven – today we have one of the most recognisable by Richard Strauss – at least it is if you are a horn player 😉 – for everyone else it is the opening few bars of Also Sprach Zarathustra!!
Lesser Spotted Beethoven
If we did a quiz and I asked you to name as many pieces of music by Beethoven that you could think of, I suspect that this overture would be well down the list! It was, however, the first orchestral work of Beethoven that I ever played.
High Horn
I’ve been neglecting the horn players recently 😃
Some Fireworks Today
The music of the baroque period covers so many great composers – and can be very exciting. This performance is really good – and on period instruments making it sound more like it might have done originally.
A Trumpeter Using His Voice
Just one instrument in today’s performance – well, I guess two since Wynton Marsalis also uses his voice to speak before playing his trumpet. Recorded just about a month ago I thought this was well worth sharing.
