This overture is another of the works that was included in the Reader’s Digest collection of LPs that my Dad had bought and which was, I guess, my introduction to “classical” music.
Looking back, the music included in that set wasn’t always the “most famous” by the composer – so we have the Carnival Overture rather than the New World Symphony from Dvorak. Equally it was almost entirely filled with “well known” works and was, as I’ve said before, a really good education of a breadth variety of the repertoire.
