Puirt à beul

One style of Scottish music that I enjoy listening to is Puirt à beul – literally “mouth music” and usually cheerful. Personally I can’t listen to this without a very quick urge to tap my foot. I am also rather in awe of those who are adept at this form of singing.

OK – so you won’t understand the Gaelic – but I hope you enjoy the singing of Julie Fowlis.

It is strange how indecipherable lyrics and monotonous melody can combine to make a compelling and entertaining song! 😉

I was privileged to be an uni at the same time as Julie, she was two years above me. Beautiful voice, and a great person as well.
