Medical Memory

Today’s “big” piece is actually quite short compared to some of the Monday choices recently. Apart from being a ‘significant’ piece of music for Monday it is also following on with the theme of “pieces of music I first heard by accident”.

In this case I actually have a very vivid memory of where and when I heard it. It was in 1974 – I was in hospital recuperating from a hernia operation and listening to Radio 3 on my little transistor radio (using a single earpiece – this is old technology!!!)

The symphony as a whole captured my imagination (and imprinted itself on my memory seemingly) – what a great horn part – but the finale is the bit that was afterwards “on repeat” in my mind. Perhaps it will have the same effect for someone finding this post.
