In The Bournemouth Youth Orchestra

One of the downsides of moving away from Scotland after I finished university was that I lost all my contacts in the non-Salvation Army music field. So in Bournemouth I had to start finding outlets for my horn playing.

I joined what was then the Poole College Youth Orchestra and also played with Gli Amici Della Musica. When Geoff Otter started the Bournemouth Youth Orchestra he didn’t need to use too much persuasion to convince me to help him there as his principal horn.

One of the pieces of music I was introduced to with that Orchestra was the 5th Symphony of Parry that I am sharing today. It isn’t so well known as many symphonies, but is really lovely. It also has a wicked horn solo at the start of the last movement – and – knowing Geoff – I am sure that he relished the fact that he was putting me under a bit of pressure😁

If you already know this symphony I know you will enjoy hearing it again – if you don’t know it – then here is your opportunity.

Hubert Parry : Symphony No.5
