I realised that as I was going through this week I have been (subconsciously so far) picking different types of musical group that I have been a part of at some time – Concert Band, Orchestra, Brass Ensemble…. So I decided that I should continue that for the rest of the week.
Cats (Not The Musical)
On Sunday I shared some music played by our Brass Ensemble, Glorianna. Much of the influence that was behind the creation of that group was from the wonderful Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. The music that they played was varied from the very old to music commissioned for the ensemble itself.
Late Call
My older scottish friends may be able to work out how my very late post last night could lead me to today’s music choice – but for everyone else I think that perhaps you may need just a wee bit of help to work it out.
Military Band Camp
After I left school I was fortunate to be enlisted by the Glasgow School’s Music Department as a French Horn teacher and, as part of that I attended the Concert Band summer camp as Horn Tutor for five years. The best horn players went to the First or Second Orchestra camps so it was, in general, the younger players who were in the Concert Band – although some preferred that style of music.
Glorianna On The Mountain
A March – Mountain Camp – for Sunday morning played by Glorianna.
Happy (Belated) Birthday Barbra
Today’s post is inspired by the fact that the singer, Barbra Streisand, had her 78th birthday yesterday – Happy Birthday!
May It Be
My offering for Friday is a moment of calm – perhaps I should do more of these 🤔 – we can always do with slowing everything down for a while.
Danilo’s Story
As I have said before, there are many treats around on the www during this lockdown as musicians, orchestras, opera companies, theatres and much more all find themselves unable to perform as they would normally do. One of those is the Metropolitan Opera of New York who are offering a stream of an opera from their recordings each evening. Tonight it is Franz Lehar’s Die Lustige Witwe (The Merry Widow).
Creature Comforts
As Monty Python would have said “…and now for something completely different”! When we were on holiday a couple of years ago in the USA I managed to see the Blue Man Group show at the Luxor Hotel. I had heard of them many years previously, seen videos – but this was my first live viewing.
Something On My Mind
One of the album covers I shared was The King’s Singers “Out of the Blue”. This was one of the first recordings of this group that I bought and it was definitely an oft-played LP for a few years.
