Another larger than life figure in the field of “humour in music” is Gerard Hoffnung. He organised a series of three festivals in the Royal Festival Hall – the third of which was coincidentally on my 8th birthday! I did have the CD set of these concerts, but somewhere along the line I loaned it to someone and they obviously enjoyed it a lot as well, since it was never returned 😁
Now We Have A Laugh
There are lots of ways that comedy and music can be combined – not always deliberately 😃 things going wrong often turn very funny – but I am aware that taste in comedy is a very individual thing – so forgive me if some of the selections that I share over the next few days you don’t find at all amusing.
Another Favourite Symphony
Today’s mammoth Monday offering is Brahms.
Another Bruckner Motet
The only difficulty when it comes to choosing something by Bruckner for a Sunday offering is that there is so much to choose from! Its been a while since we had one of his motets – here is his Ave Maria – another example of why he is (probably) my favourite composer)
A Wee Bit Of Sunshine
Given the rather damp weather here today I thought that my music should have a summery theme – so its a good time to also change the style a bit 😂
A Worthy Mention
Staying with my time in the Wessex Youth Orchestra the contemplative music for this Friday is the slow movement of the Grieg Piano Concerto which they played at the gala concert in 1980.
An Unusual Time Signature
In looking at what we played during the France trip when I was creating yesterday’s video I was reminded of a fun little piece which I thought would be good to share – have to admit I had completely forgotten about it.
To France With Wessex
On this day… in 1979 I was at the Chateau de Villandry with the Wessex Youth Orchestra. The trip to Tours and the Loire Valley was my only foreign orchestra trip – and very enjoyable it was too.
Berlin Philharmonic Horns
Oops – bit late with this one….
My All Time Number 1?
The facebook format/environment does not lend itself to deep/meaningful/philosophical conversations and in my music links I have (on the whole) limited what I have shared to shorter/lighter/easily-digestible 😂 music.
