Doing these daily posts has reminded me of just how many of my memories have got a musical accompaniment 😀 and today is no exception. The links I am providing give plenty clues as to my musical tastes and for me “going to a concert” when I was younger meant the Scottish National Orchestra (in the days before it became Royal!) proms, or the Edinburgh Festival, or Scottish Opera – you get the idea – that was when I wasn’t playing in concerts myself.
Took me a while to go to a “pop” concert and my first ever one inspires today’s link.
Apologies for the fact that the video is from Top of the Pops and that therefore Nigel Pegrum is treating playing the drum kit as a non-contact sport – if anyone reading this is young enough not to know TotP was famously filled by mime artists. They are all, of course, lip-syncing but I heard them perform this (and of course other songs) live and they really could sing this well. (one of the comments on the video points out that this was well before autotune)
There is one video that I listened to of them singing a song unaccompanied (and live) – having been given a note at the start from a pitch pipe, several minutes later at the end of the song whichever of the band had the pitch pipe mischievously plays it again – and they are almost bang in tune.
