Back To Brass

Like last week the “big choice” this Monday is a little different – not one very long piece of music but rather a collection of short ones – from the video title I have linked to the album playlist so you can listen to as few or as many that you want to.

This style of Brass music was perhaps my favourite to play with small groups. Very different in style from either the “big” orchestral works or the more modern brass chamber music – it represented a different sort of challenge. This is one of my favourite recordings – the antiphonal effects are great.

Those also presented a new challenge when performing. Keeping everything in time, often at a considerable distance could be fun. I remember at one of the schools music camps I got the job of conducting a piece of Gabrielli – scored for two wind quartets. Lets just say that it was “interesting” to have eight young musicians playing in two groups at opposite ends of the school gymnasium.

Pretty sure we all got to the end together…..

Enjoy some or all of these
