It was a youth meeting at Clydebank SA and I was to play a couple of solos. The first one was announced and I stood up – my accompanist (I can’t remember who it was) played me an A and I blew into my horn to check the tuning.
No sound…..
I blew harder… – still nothing (apart from getting rather more red in the face 😰)
Not knowing what to do next, I probably suggested they sing a chorus (or something) and disappeared backstage to investigate.
After checking all the slides/valves etc I discovered that the cause of my problem was the fact that I had kept my mouthpiece in my pocket to do some surreptitious buzzing and a small piece of rolled up paper had got jammed in it – of course, the harder I was blowing, the more it was getting stuck. 🤣🤣
Quite possibly my most embarrassing moment as a soloist. I can’t actually remember what I was due to play – but it may well have been this as it is a solo I used frequently – and this is probably the shortest video I have used so far!
