An African Mass

Within my record collection there are a few that might qualify as “surprises” – this is one of those.

The Missa Luba is a Congolese version of the Mass. It was composed by Father Guido Haazen, a Fransiscan Friar from Belgium, who was the director of a school in the Congo.

This recording dates from the mid-60s and I have to admit I hadn’t listened to it for many years. Unusually, I have linked from here to a playlist rather than an individual video as the mass consists of six parts – each quite short.

There are more up-to-date versions of these songs online, however, for me the authenticity and enthusiasm of this original recording makes it impossible to choose any other version.
