The Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals are all packed full of “good tunes” and Oklahoma is no exception. One of the unexpected consequences of playing for a show with multiple rehearsals and then several public performances is that you end up knowing all the words – which I guess would be a bonus if I ever had to sing them in a karaoke contest 😂
This excerpt is the opening of Act 2 – the picture quality isn’t great, but the sound is fine. Aunt Eller (played here by Maureen Lipman) introduces a song which could really be a song for our times – replace “the farmer” and “the cowman” by any of the many groupings that are perpetually at each other’s throats. There is, I think, a surfeit of “us versus them” in the world and often the prevailing messages are divisive. Better that “the farmer and the cowman” (or whoever you wish to substitute) should indeed be friends.

We went up to London to watch that show. I think Hugh Jackman was also in it.
