Going Right Back To The Beginning

Almost nine years ago now since I started this blog – although I had been blogging on my work intranet for a few years before that.  I decided that now is a good time to recap on the raison d’etre of what I am writing here.

In my first post I wrote :

The purpose of this blog is not to show off what I know; nor to seem to be clever; nor to put forward my daft ideas as “the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth”; nor to suggest that I know anything that other people don’t know.

No, the purpose is to explore the limits of my own knowledge; to try to figure out the answer to “why?”; and to progress along the road that Einstein laid out in his quote that I am using as a tagline to increase my circle of ignorance – hence the name of the blog.

I sort of hope that one or two things along the way will be of interest to someone, but if not – then so be it. I will not be in any way offended!

The tagline quote from Einstein to the right is being proven so true – the more I feed my ignorance, the more I discover that there is more to know.  Just at the moment in particular I am finding new sources, new people to ‘listen to’ and – perhaps surprisingly – just a few hints that I am not the only one who thinks this way.

Just tonight I found a new person who I need to listen to a bit more – I’ll keep his identity secret for now until I can talk a little more intelligently about him.  One thing though from what he was saying struck home and triggered this post.  He made a distinction between “ignorance” (which I have been at pains to point out is a lack of knowledge, not a lack of intelligence) and “foolishness” – using that knowledge in ‘wrong’ ways.  I’m sure I will come back to that distinction.

For now though, the important thing is that I have re-affirmed the purpose of the posts that I am writing and I will most certainly continue to find things to feed my ignorance.  I also will update the contents of the Trough as there are a number of useful additions that need to be made.
