These contemplations were written in Vienna in May and June 1986. They are entirely unstructured and split into the separate sessions when I originally wrote them. They are, perhaps my first ever blogs although that long ago there was no www around to host the blog 😂 that is how old I am. They can be seen as an early attempt to “feed my ignorance” in precisely the way that this blog later took form. They are, of course, representative of my thoughts back then which have inevitably changed in many ways since that time.
Thoughts by the River
This isn’t directly connected to anything previous. As I was walking home along the riverbank, I was suddenly struck by how lovely life was. At the same time I realised how futile it seems. Why do I exist? Why does anyone exist? I am sure that I will not greatly benefit mankind and I am not sure what good it would do if I did. We are really so insignificant.
Life has been complicated to such an extent that it has been hidden that we only live in order to live. I mean everything we do, we do in order to improve our life. Why? I don’t think anyone can or will answer that. Even looking religiously there is little point. The stumbling block is Why? Why did God create the world? What good is it doing Him? It has, seemingly, been nothing but trouble to Him.
I don’t think that it is possible to answer these questions. So I will leave this passage as a statement of them. The futility strikes one from time to time!
