Back here for the first time since 1994. For most of the albums of pics from the trip I have limited myself to no more than 50 images – failed to cut it down given that I had more than three times that many from the area. Was lucky enough to get up close to a family of deer and we spent one evening watching the sunset – stunning.

Seals of California
Mainly taken at the Elephant Seal Sanctuary near Hearst Castle – but also at Monterey, San Francisco and elsewhere. Noisy, smelly animals that often manage to produce cute pictures.

Just up the coast from Cambria, close to San Simeon, is Hearst Castle.. Unlike any other castle I have ever visited – more an Italianate village atop a hill than a fortified castle.

Grand Canyon West
Like Yosemite – the Grand Canyon is unrepresentable in pictures. We visited Grand Canyon West – the least developed of the three main tourist areas around the vast Canyon. The views were simply stunning – and the pictures fail to give a real sense of the scale. In one picture I have highlighted a helicopter flying through the canyon – it is (at the resolution that is used in these albums) impossible to spot.

A must visit from Las Vegas is the magnificent Hoover Dam.
