{"id":626,"date":"2021-03-29T23:06:40","date_gmt":"2021-03-29T23:06:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/systemsthink.co.uk\/wordpress\/?p=626"},"modified":"2025-05-26T17:27:48","modified_gmt":"2025-05-26T17:27:48","slug":"completing-the-elgar-set","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/systemsthink.co.uk\/wordpress\/completing-the-elgar-set\/","title":{"rendered":"Completing the &#8220;Elgar Set&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tonight&#8217;s big work is Elgar&#8217;s 1st Symphony.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I used to practice sometimes by playing the horn part along to a recording &#8211; and this was one of the pieces that I really enjoyed playing &#8211; although it was never destined to be something that I performed in concert.<\/p>\n<p>It is actually good training to play along that way &#8211; no help from the conductor &#8211; you need to listen well and &#8216;feel&#8217; the changes of tempi, etc..<\/p>\n<h5 align=\"center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/sCuSuwDXxUA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edward Elgar : Symphony No.1<\/a><\/h5>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<div class=\"video-wrapper\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sCuSuwDXxUA\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Matt King<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How interesting that you use Norringtons\u2019 version of Elgar George! it\u2019s just my personal taste but his mission to rid symphony orchestras of vibrato for me just leaves Elgar (in this instance) sounding more like Palestrina&#8230; Stuttgart is a great band (when someone else is conducting them \ud83d\ude02\ud83d\ude02). That said, it\u2019s music, so completely subjective!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Howard J Evans<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Matt, this made me smile. I was surprised to see a picture of Norrington conducting Elgar!<\/p>\n<p><strong>George R McConnell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was also a bit surprised to come across the video with Norrington conducting &#8211; and chose it party because of the slight novelty value \ud83d\ude03 &#8211; the recordings I have &#8220;offline&#8221; don&#8217;t include this one! One of the interesting things (to me) when I have been sharing these has been trying to analyse my own criteria for choosing which version &#8211; not sure I could actually articulate it though \ud83d\ude09- certainly something a little &#8216;different&#8217; would be part of it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Matt King<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>George, i can recommend listening to Sir Roger with the RSNO playing Debussy&#8230; same approach.
