Of course, like most ‘new’ technologies how it works and, to a certain extent, what it does is a mystery to the vast majority of the population.

I say ‘new’ technology because the reality is that this is much less new than most people think. I remember a group that I worked alongside way back – like over forty years ago – who were looking at the meaning of and uses of artificial intelligence. Back then the limiting factor was the available technology – there has been a huge increase in the available computing power since then – and anything that was done then would be viewed, well, as primitive.

What hasn’t changed though is that I have had a gnawing feeling that the efforts are somewhat misnamed. Yes, perhaps there really is research into Artificial Intelligence, but that will always be limited because defining what constitutes intelligence is far from easy. I don’t intend to get into that in this post.

I sort of think that Artificial Knowledge would be a safer name for this. (although thinking of DIKW it is perhaps not even at the level of knowledge – more information) There is certainly a lot of data involved and there are algorithms that turn that data into information. At some level it can be turned into knowledge but even at this level the ‘knowledge’ is limited by what the creators have input.

Intelligence is so much more than ‘just’ knowledge. Importantly it requires some creativity; it requires information that is more than ‘just’ data.

It would be interesting to have insight into exactly how an “AI” has carried out the things that it is implied by its ‘learning’. Sure it can create new data points, but do they have meaning – or are they simp0ly a result of the AI putting together pieces of existing information in ‘new’ ways. Even if these new data points have meaning it would point to accidentally finding something useful rather than being a sign of intelligence.

The most telling thing about the ‘mistakes’ that have been made with AI models seem to be things which have been accidentally (or maliciously?) put into the model by the developers – not good! It would be interesting to know just how much of the current research on what “intelligence” is has been taken on board by AI developers. (and how much is simply being clever coders!)

There is little doubt that Artificial Intelligence is something that is interacting with many people’s lives these days.
