{"id":1101,"date":"2020-07-14T14:45:31","date_gmt":"2020-07-14T14:45:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/systemsthink.co.uk\/wordpress\/?p=1101"},"modified":"2025-06-25T15:52:37","modified_gmt":"2025-06-25T15:52:37","slug":"a-cello-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/systemsthink.co.uk\/wordpress\/a-cello-today\/","title":{"rendered":"A Cello Today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today my mind goes back to Dunoon in 1971. <a href=\"https:\/\/systemsthink.co.uk\/wordpress\/castle-toward\/\">Castle Toward<\/a> was a marvellous venue for the course.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As an aside, this also marks the debut of the moustache that I still have today &#8211; my top lip coming in contact with a cricket ball meant a trip to the doctor in Innellan and a few days off from rehearsals. \ud83d\ude01The moustache was grown as a result of that incident.<\/p>\n<p>The piece of music I am sharing is the concerto from that programme &#8211; I didn&#8217;t actually play in this (only needed two horns and my lip needed the rest!!) &#8211; but it remains one of my favourite cello concertos. Obviously do not have a recording of our concert &#8211; but you can&#8217;t go wrong with Rostropovich.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of my bruised lip I was also excused rehearsals for a couple of days &#8211; so spent a lot of time chatting with Noreen (the soloist). On the tuba, I spent most of the week, and the performance, counting bars \ud83e\udd23<\/p>\n<p><strong>George R McConnell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With Simon Rattle on piano in the Stravinsky &#8211; one of the few years around then when I didn&#8217;t &#8220;help out&#8221; &#8211; was at the rehearsals and concert in the City Hall though<\/p>\n<p><strong>Terry Hudson<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Was that really Simon Rattle?<\/p>\n<p><strong>George R McConnell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It certainly was &#8211; he was a student of John Carewe<\/p>\n<div class=\"quotecenter\"><em>I have immensely happy memories of my time in Castle Toward, working with the Glasgow Schools Symphony Orchestra&#8230;. it was obvious that the location had a profound effect on all the young musicians. It is exciting to think that this great building may once again be a hub for music, such an important step forward.
