The Red Thread
Some of my earliest blog entries dealt with some thoughts of mine about friends - closeness of friendship and the fact that there are just a few people in anyone's life who become intricately entwined in that life. As my ideas are developing in that area (and in all other areas of course) it now strikes me that fundamental to the friendships are connections - and this also sits well with my later amendment that whilst I started out talking about friends the 'closeness' attribute also applied to enemies!

Making Connections
Have you ever really thought about why people make connections with others? It is both natural and mysterious - why connect with Person A, but not with person B? Certainly some of this is down to 'circumstances' - we will make connections (good or bad) with people that we share a close space with - at work, at school, in church, or wherever. There is, however, more to it than that.

The Other Side Of "If Only"
When you start to think about it, it is sobering - no - downright scary just how many people and events may be affected in the future by the decisions we make, individually and collectively, today. I may believe that I have some idea of the immediate effects however, given the way that the world is now connected so much more than ever before, it is next to impossible to determine the totality of the effect of each and every decision we make.

A Word That Deserves a Better Press
There are some words that fall into disuse. There are other words that people are scared of. There are words that change their meaning over time. We all use too many words without thinking. Words play a huge part in everyone's life. I'd like to talk about an adjective that we seemingly try to avoid - vulnerable.

The Meaning of Average
What a bizarre headline for an article was my first thought, but then - is this how most people think? Then again - bizarre headlines are not exactly unusual - they appear everywhere and are mainly designed to pull in the unsuspecting reader.

History Is What We Make It
The fact that our memory is nearly 100% fallible (note that I am not saying 100% wrong) means that to some extent we need to doubt what we have really experienced in the past. Our own personal life story is full of bits and pieces that our minds have made up to "fill in the gaps" between the reality that we actually do remember correctly.

Games People Play
We all do it - whether it is keeping something a secret or "putting on a face" when we are feeling down or slapping on the makeup to make us look better than we do (NOT something I indulge in personally
) or dressing for dinner - its all an act - a game we play to hide the 'reality' in one way or another from someone or other.
Its Not Just the Big Picture
The devil is in the detail
Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves
Big things come in small packages
The longest journey begins with one step

Living in Parallel Worlds
Reading the book Anathem by Neal Stephenson has got me once again thinking about the many different worlds that we each live in. I have briefly mentioned this in a previous post, however now is a good time to expand on some of those ideas as well as to pull together what that means in terms of some of the other aspects of friendship and mental models that I have talked about.

Past the 5m Mark
At the moment my profile on LinkedIn suggests that my connection link me to approximately 5m professionals. Is this a cause for celebration? I think probably not. I haven’t yet consolidated the number as above 5m – it varies by several thousand above and below. Does it make any difference to me?
